Embracing Change: My Journey from California to North Idaho
Updated: Sep 18
When people ask me what it's like moving from California to North Idaho, my answer is always the same: it's different—but in the most wonderful way.
A New Pace of Life
Like many who relocate here, I initially expected the beautiful scenery. The mountains, the lakes, the pine trees, and the four distinct seasons are everything people say they are. What I didn't expect was how much my daily life would change for the better.
Life in North Idaho moves at a different pace. People still wave to one another. Neighbors introduce themselves. Cashiers make conversation. There is a sense of community here that can feel surprisingly refreshing after living in a larger metropolitan area.
Space to Breathe
One of the first things newcomers notice is the space. In California, especially Southern California, every square foot feels precious. In North Idaho, there is room to breathe. Homes often sit on larger lots, roads are less crowded, and nature is never far away. Instead of spending weekends sitting in traffic, many residents find themselves hiking, boating, skiing, or simply enjoying their own backyard.
The Beauty of Four Seasons
The seasons are another adjustment—and one that many people come to love. Summer on the lake is spectacular, fall brings vibrant colors, winter turns the landscape into a snow-covered postcard, and spring arrives with fresh green growth everywhere. Experiencing four true seasons creates a connection to nature that many people never knew they were missing.
Simplicity and Quality of Life
Of course, there are differences. You may not find every restaurant, shopping district, or entertainment option that exists in larger California cities. But what North Idaho offers in return is something many people value even more: simplicity, beauty, and quality of life.
That said, moving away doesn't mean leaving behind everything you loved about California. I still love California and always will. The beaches, the sunshine, the incredible diversity, and the memories made there remain very special to me. In fact, my visits back are precious. Seeing family and friends, revisiting favorite places, and soaking in the familiar sights reminds me how fortunate I am to appreciate the best of both worlds.
Discovering New Housing Styles
The housing styles are different as well. Many homeowners moving from California are surprised by how much home they can purchase here compared to major California markets. They also discover a design aesthetic that feels perfectly suited to the region—warm woods, natural stone, mountain-inspired architecture, and interiors that connect beautifully with the surrounding landscape.
Creating Inviting Spaces
As an interior specialist, I often work with clients who are relocating to North Idaho. One of my favorite parts of the process is helping them create homes that embrace the lifestyle they've come here to enjoy. Large windows that capture mountain views, comfortable gathering spaces for family and friends, cozy fireplaces, and natural materials all help create a home that feels connected to this incredible place.
A Shift in Priorities
The truth is, moving from California to North Idaho isn't simply a change of address. It's often a change in priorities. People come here seeking a different lifestyle—one that values community, nature, family, and a little more breathing room.
The Fabulous Life in North Idaho
And while there may be a period of adjustment, many people discover what countless North Idaho residents already know: life here is not just different. It's pretty fabulous.
As I reflect on my journey, I realize that embracing change can lead to unexpected joys. The warmth of community, the beauty of nature, and the simplicity of life here have transformed my perspective. I invite you to explore this wonderful region and discover how it can enrich your life, just as it has mine.
Whether you are considering a move or simply curious about North Idaho, I hope my experiences inspire you to embrace the beauty of change.
