Why I Recommend Wallpaper on Almost Every Interior Design Project
Updated: Sep 18

If you've worked with me, you've probably noticed one thing pretty quickly—I almost always recommend wallpaper somewhere in the home.
For years, wallpaper carried an unfair reputation because many people remembered the floral prints and difficult removal methods from decades ago. Today's wallpaper is completely different. Modern designs are sophisticated, beautifully textured, and available in styles ranging from quiet neutrals to dramatic statement patterns. When thoughtfully selected, wallpaper adds personality and depth in a way that paint alone simply can't achieve.
Why Wallpaper Makes Such a Difference
Wallpaper creates an instant sense of custom design. It adds texture, warmth, movement, and visual interest that elevates a room from feeling finished to feeling intentionally designed.
I often use wallpaper to:
Create a stunning focal wall in a living room or bedroom
Add drama to a powder room
Warm up an entryway
Highlight built-in cabinetry
Add softness behind open shelving
Bring character to dining rooms and home offices
One of my favorite aspects of wallpaper is that it allows each home to tell its own story. Whether my clients prefer French Country, Modern Organic, Traditional, Mountain Modern, or Transitional design, there is a wallpaper that perfectly complements their style.
Understanding the Different Types of Wallpaper
One of the first questions clients ask is, "What kind of wallpaper should I choose?" The answer depends on the space, the wall condition, and whether you're looking for a temporary or long-term solution.
Traditional Wallpaper
Traditional wallpaper is still my preferred choice for most permanent installations.
It is professionally installed using wallpaper adhesive and typically offers the most seamless appearance. Professional installers can wrap corners beautifully, match intricate patterns precisely, and create a finish that looks custom built into the home.
Advantages:
Beautiful, high-end appearance
Excellent pattern matching
Durable for many years
Large selection of luxury papers
Best for feature walls and entire rooms
If you're investing in a remodel or designing your forever home, traditional wallpaper is almost always worth it.
Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper
Peel-and-stick wallpaper has become incredibly popular, especially for DIY projects.
It installs much like a large decal and doesn't require paste, making it attractive for renters or homeowners who enjoy changing their décor more frequently.
Advantages:
Easy DIY installation
Removable
Great for temporary spaces
Minimal wall preparation
While peel-and-stick products have improved dramatically over the years, they can sometimes be more difficult to install than expected. Air bubbles, stretching, and pattern alignment require patience, especially on large walls.
Self-Adhesive Wallpaper
The terms "self-adhesive" and "peel-and-stick" are often used interchangeably. Both feature adhesive already applied to the back of the material.
Quality varies significantly between manufacturers. Premium self-adhesive wallpapers generally perform much better than inexpensive alternatives, particularly in rooms with changing humidity levels.
Where I Love to Use Wallpaper
Some of my favorite places include:
Powder rooms
Dining rooms
Primary bedrooms
Entry foyers
Behind bookshelves
Laundry rooms
Mudrooms
Accent walls
Ceiling details
Many people are surprised to hear that even a small amount of wallpaper can completely transform a room.
Is Wallpaper Difficult to Remove?
Modern wallpaper is far easier to remove than older products installed decades ago.
Many premium wallpapers are designed to remove cleanly when installed and maintained correctly. Professional installation also helps ensure the wallpaper can be removed with minimal wall damage when the time eventually comes for a change.
My Design Philosophy
Wallpaper isn't about following trends. It's about creating spaces that feel layered, welcoming, and uniquely yours.
Some projects call for a bold botanical pattern. Others need subtle grasscloth texture or a delicate linen-inspired print that quietly adds warmth. Every selection is made to complement the architecture of the home and the people who live there.
When clients hesitate because they think wallpaper may feel overwhelming, I often suggest starting with a powder room or entryway. These smaller spaces are wonderful places to add personality and make a memorable first impression.
At Vignette Interiors, wallpaper has become one of my favorite design tools because it allows us to create homes that feel collected, timeless, and full of character. Whether it's a dramatic statement wall or a soft, textured backdrop, wallpaper has the power to completely transform a space—and that's why you'll find me recommending it on almost every project.
